Anders
Stone
Small Works On Shit.

Here in Texas it’s always a "big
is more" mentality. Anders Stone seems
to be thumbing his nose at this notion quite
deliberately, especially when you consider that
the works are done on trash (hence the name
of the show)
All manner of refuse was used for the supports,
sardine cartons, milk cartons, condom and rum
boxes, etc.

"More
Good Shit" on King Oscar box in found mirror
25"x 32"
My understanding is that the show was a contractual
obligation and not much to Mr. Stone’s
liking. Often wearing his politics on his sleeve,
Stone makes no secret of his disdain for "big"
America. His refusal to travel to the states
of Kansas and Texas (what Kansas has to do with
corporate America is beyond me), is only topped
by his notorious quote of not trusting any painter
that works sitting down. All that said, these
are some of his most enjoyable and light-hearted
works to date. The curator of the show, Helen
Deis, says she is unaware of any acrimony between
the artist and the show’s sponsor, The
Texas Arts League/University of Texas. My above
comments and understandings are just idle rumor
and are not valid she insists. Several attempts
to get a comment from the artist went unanswered.
So I guess that I will just have to go with
the rumors, especially since it makes for better
copy than simply saying "cute show on shit."

For those of you in New York, be sure to check
out Stone's solo show that opens Sept. 12, '06
